Dr. Backes was born and raised on a dairy farm in St. Cloud, Minnesota. As a farm boy, Dr. Backes has always had a love for animals, and originally his dreams were to become a veterinarian. While Dr. Backes assisted the farm vet with numerous deliveries of the livestock, the vet felt that Dr. Backes was very gifted and should use his talent and become a physician. His first desire was to be an OB/Gyn physician to deliver newborn babies. As a student, he did an assigned rotation with the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) and saved his first premature baby. This is when Dr. Backes knew he wanted to be a Neonatologist and dedicate his career to premature babies and children.
He received his undergraduate degree from Concordia College in MN, and went to medical school at the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, MO. Following a move to Ohio, Dr. Backes did his residency at Doctors Hospital and Children’s Hospital in Columbus, OH, as well as a Clinical Fellowship and Research Fellowship at Ohio State University. He became a certified Neonatologist and the director of the Ohio Health/Doctors Hospital NICU from 1981 to 2013.
Dr. Backes has Board Certifications in Pediatrics and Neonatology. He opened his first pediatric office in 1980, and continues to be the director and president of Kiddie West Pediatric Center. He has been actively involved in training residents and students since 1981. Dr. Backes was regional dean for Osteopathic Medicine Central Region 1981-1992. He was Director of the NAS (Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome) Children’s Hospital 2012 – 2013. He was a Pediatric Support Group Director for Maternal Addiction 2009- 2013 with Comp Drug. Currently he is Vice-President of the American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians (US wide). He is committee member of MINDS MATTER of the Ohio Psychotropic Medication Quality Improvement Collaborative 2013 – present. Finally, he is the Pediatric Coordinator with the State of Ohio Corrections with the Marysville Reformatory for Women, Marysville, Ohio 2001 – present.
Dr. Backes and his wife Wendy have inspired their three children, Carl, Jeffrey, and Katherine to have the same excitement and love for medicine. As physicians in their own medical field they surely understand their fathers’ love of caring for patients. Today, he and his wife enjoy being grandparents to their five grandchildren.
